  • The Constitution of the United States: An Introduction, by Floyd G. Cullop This book is not avavailable at the campus bookstore - however, while I strongly recommend this specific book, any full text edition of the US Constitution is acceptable.
    Recommended Books
  • The Red Badge of Courage, by Stephen Crane. This is a novel examining the Civil War from a Union soldier's perspective. Published in 1895. Any edition is acceptable.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe. This is a novel examining slavery in the mid-19th century from inside the institution on many levels. Published in 1852. Any edition containing the full text is acceptable.

  • The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair. This novel, widely considered a classic work of muckraking semi-journalism, examines the turn-of-the-20th-century immigrant labor market in Chicago through the eyes of an Eastern European immigrant. Published 1906. Any edition is acceptable.
  • Starship Troopers, by Robert A. Heinlein. This is a novel that examines the societal repercussions of fully committed citizenship. Published in 1959. Any edition is acceptable.

  • Iliad, by Homer. Long considered a classic in Western literature, this book gives readers insight into the classical Greek value system.
  • Caesar's Legion, by Stephan Dando-Collins. One of the best single-volume looks at the Roman army.
