BANDITS ACROSS AMERICA - 2001

Suzuki Bandit 1200S

(sorry, there are no pictures on this page)

FINAL UPDATE (2008)

Both bikes were totaled. Jason's was just a mess and the adjuster just wrote it off immediately. He replaced it with a nice silver 2001 Kawasaki Concours. He said one of the reasons he did that was because it fit him as well as the Bandit 600 he had, but also because it had integrated hard side cases. After watching me effortlessly remove my Givi cases night after night, he grew increasingly frustrated with his bodged-together saddle/duffel bag setup.

I was surprised that my bike was totaled. I told the adjuster I didn't care about replacing things that were just scratched, like the tank and the muffler. What sank me was the Givi Wingrack. Because it mounts to the rear subframe in several places, when my bike hit the ground and bounced over, the force not only ripped off the two cases, but also pushed the wingrack hard enough to actually bend the subframe, the part that holds up the rear of the bike (body panels, seat, and rider). If the Bandit was a more expensive bike, it would be possible to simply detach the subframe and bolt a new one up. However, on the Bandit, the subframe is welded onto the main frame, so technically the frame is bent and that means the bike is totaled. I replaced my beloved 1999 Bandit 1200 with a 1995 BMW R1100GS, black just like the one I got to ride in San Francisco.

Jason and I hope to complete this trip someday.
Maybe it'll look something like this
